The Technology

How Steam Distillation Works

The same process nature uses to make rain — evaporation, then condensation — leaving everything else behind.

1
Water is Heated to a Boil

Tap water in the boiling chamber is heated until it turns to steam.

2
Vapour Rises, Contaminants Don't

Only water vapour crosses into the condensing coil — minerals, sediment, and other residue stay behind in the boiling chamber.

3
Vapour Condenses Back to Liquid

As the steam cools, it condenses back into pure water and collects in the carafe.

4
You're Left With Distilled Water

What's left behind in the boiling chamber tells the story — you can see and smell the residue that didn't make it into your glass.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Which distiller should I start with?

For most households, a Megahome countertop model is the most accessible starting point — no installation, simple operation, about 1 litre per hour. If you need higher daily volume or want an automatic, continuous system, Precision Water Systems' family-size units are built for that. Call us at 250-370-1818 for a recommendation based on your household size.

Is distilled water safe to drink?

Yes. Distilled water is the purest form of drinking water available — steam distillation removes contaminants that many other filtration methods miss, because only water vapour crosses into the collection chamber.

How is distillation different from reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane, which removes many contaminants but can miss smaller particles and requires regular membrane replacement plus wastewater. Steam distillation evaporates water into vapour and condenses it back into pure liquid, leaving contaminants behind in the boiling chamber — no membrane to replace, no wasted water.

How much water can a countertop unit produce?

A Megahome countertop distiller produces approximately one litre per hour. Most households run it overnight and have fresh distilled water ready each morning.

Do you ship distillers across Canada?

Yes — Canada-wide. Free shipping applies to orders over $199 on Megahome units; Precision Water Systems units are quoted separately due to size and weight, and typically take about 2 weeks for delivery.

Should I distill first or structure my water?

Distill first for purity, then structure after if you're also interested in a structured water unit — many customers start with distillation alone and add structuring later.
