Description: Patchouli is an aromatic perennial shrub belonging to the mint family. It has large green petals and white-pink flowers. The plant can reach to 2 to 3 feet (1 meter) in height and is native to Asian Regions where the climate is warm.
Colour: Golden orange to dark reddish brown viscous liquid
Aromatic Scent: Patchouli has a warm, earthy aroma with fresh fruit – like tones.
Common Use: Patchouli is sought after for its antiseptic properties and aromatherapists recognize Patchouli as antidepressant, deodorant, sedative, fungicide & anti-inflammatory. It also has diuretic properties which make it useful in cases of fluid retention and cellulite. It helps stimulate renewal of skin cells, assist in healing rough, cracked skin, sores and wounds. It also has uplifting and calming properties that help control depression; anxiety and most stress related emotions. In aromatherapy, Patchouli is an excellent fixative that can help extend other, more expensive oils.
Spiritual Use: This oil has been used to relax the mind and clarify thoughts.
It is used to align the Heart Chakra with the Root and Sacral Chakras. It does this by releasing obsessions, insecurities and jealousies and enhancing our desire to live a fuller life.
It also grounds the body and ask us to stay in the present moment rather than stressing about things that are beyond our control.

History: The word Patchouli originated in Hindustan. It has been used in many cultures to prevent the spread of diseases and infections. In the 1960’s and 1970’s it became in great demand again in the US and Europe, especially due to the hippie movement. The clothing and fabrics imported from India were identified by the unique patchouli odor because it was used as a moth repellent, hence the association with that movement.
